Update - Autumn 2013

Posted by TaintedLogic - September 9th, 2013

That's right! :D It's time for my semi-annual news post! I made my last news post in April 2013, right after I uploaded "Carnival," a piece which I would've made a lot of changes to if I were uploading it now. Hopefully in another 5-6 months I'll feel the same way about "Underworld," which I just uploaded earlier today (9/9/13, that is). I think I've decided that my main genres are going to be techno and trance, but I am going to be getting into some heavier stuff soon (per the suggestion of SideBySky).

As I mentioned in my last news post, I'm making a sequel to "Walls." For a while, it didn't look like that was happening, but now I can 100% confirm that it is. I'm still working with ideas for some complex harmonies, but it might even come out before the end of 2013. I've noticed that I've been finishing a lot more projects than I've started recently, coming back to old 20-second long riffs and turning them into songs.

I suppose I should also mention that I got FL 11 for my birthday (in May), never mind that it's the Producer edition, so hopefully that means I'll be using some higher quality instruments (especially strings, which I've received complaints about in the past). I've been finishing a lot more pieces in FL 10 than I've started in FL 11, though, and usually the browser presets don't correspond, so I can't just open an old FL 10 track in FL 11.

As for the particulars, I can tell you that I haven't forgotten about those house songs I promised you all those months ago when I released "Energy" (sound production just takes me a heck of a long time), and I just might have something special planned for Halloween 2013, so watch out for that! ;D

I'd also like to take this opportunity to personally thank the people whom I consider my core supporters: DylnMatrix (the guy who scouted me!), BlueOceans, Gamakaze, Johnfn, Lockyn (formerly "Khrossfire"), and JQiscool, one of whom has offered to do a collaboration with me (but more on that later). I'd like to extend my thanks (if on a less personal level) to everyone who has offered me praise, advise, or constructive criticism over the past 1+ years I've been a part of the Newgrounds community. It means so much to me, and I love the opportunities provided by this site!

Oh, and one last thing: I think I'm going to make news posts more often, because this sucker is long! XD Thanks again, Newgrounds! ;D

Good Luck with your future songs! You deserve all those core supporters since you spent so much time reviewing other peoeple's songs with a lot of detail.
I don't think it would work very well since our taste in music is so different, but I would like to try a collab. One of us can make the main melody/ies, and the other one can make the actual song using that melody.

Thanks BlueOceans! :D About the collab, I actually wasn't referring to you, but I'd love to make a collab with you if I have the time! :) During a vacation is probably the best time for me...Thanksgiving or late December or whenever. ;)

Keep it up yo! If you want some unsolicited advice, I'd say to write songs faster! About a year ago I started writing on average a song a week, and I've noticed my quality really improve after I made that decision.

Here's some guy who backs me up on this: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2008/08/quantity-always-trumps-quality.html

Also like BlueOceans said you write good reviews. You are way more observant than I was when I was your age. That can only be a good thing!

Wow! Thanks Johnfn! :D I wish I could produce faster. I'm just a busy guy, I guess...and I also usually don't upload content until I know it's finalized. Sometimes I even wait weeks before I upload something just to listen to it over again and make sure I like it. I suppose that's a bad habit. Thanks again, though! ;)

HALLO NEWS UPDATE! Took you long enough ;)

I haven't had problems opening FL 10 projects in FL 11... what presets are clashing? :o

Aww, you flatterer you, mentioning little ol' me in your post. xD You've come a long way, and I'm always looking forward to what you put out. Cheers mate!

Nice to see you dropping by, Lockyn! :D Thank you! ^^ Whenever I open an old FL 10 project in FL 11, it says "Some data files required by this project could not be located," and then it lists the files. The files were probably just browser presets only in FL 10. I've noticed I can't find old browser presets I used in some FL 10 songs, even when I use "Smart Find." I guess that's one more incentive not to use browser presets! :)

Long overdue response but here goes anyway. I understand the reluctance to submit songs until you think that they are perfect, but I think that the feedback you get from other people will be much more valuable in understanding what you need to improve than the things that you can understand by listening to your song just by yourself. There are a lot of aspects of music that you just won't be able to hear or won't even be thinking about until someone points them out to you.

This is also why I generally release songs pretty fast (NGADM notwithstanding...). It's because there's not much of a point to working on a song endlessly if there's a huge gaping flaw in it that I wasn't able to see. (And there usually is!)

Eventually I imagine you'll arrive at the point where I'm not writing songs that have flaws, and that my judgement on how my song sounds will be good enough. I think that's when you should start writing albums :) But until then, keep getting dat feedback and improving from it!

Thanks Johnfn! :D I totally agree with you about the value of feedback from others. You yourself have definitely indicated some problems with my music that I myself couldn't spot! :D I used to consider certain tracks of mine "NG-worthy" or "not NG-worthy," but now I've decided I'll upload a few more of my tracks that I know aren't perfect yet. Thank you so much, Johnfn - for everything! ^^ If I ever get famous and some journalist asks me who my influences were, I'll definitely mention you! <3 (but maybe that's getting a little bit ahead of myself, huh?) XD
