I love the emotion and simplicity. The modulations really help to keep it interesting. I love the transition at 4:28. It's very beautiful and melodic throughout, and it definitely succeeds in telling a story. My biggest complaint is at 3:09 when that sweep comes in - it sounded so electronic and fake on top of such beautiful authentic-sounding pianos and strings. Although the simplicity of this piece really adds to its beauty, perhaps you should add some percussion later in the piece, maybe between around 3:09 and 4:28. You could use a more authentic-sounding crash instead of a sweep at those places. Btw, how do you do the tempo changes that start around 4:18, because that sounded wonderful? Well, this is clearly a fantastic piece overall and I'm glad to see that you gave it your all, Johnfn. Best of luck at NGADM! ;D

johnfn responds:

Thanks man! The sweep, which I agree is not perfect, was actually intended to sound like wind. I guess I should have filtered some actual wind rather than white noise, heh.

Was thinking the same thing about percussion :) But I was worried that it would take away from the melancholy feel of the piece. (Also I was still holding onto the hope that it would be a solo piano piece until like 12 hours before the deadline...heh)

Tempo automation is your friend! If I recall right you use FL studio so you can just right click on the tempo and do "add automation". Be careful though, it's a powerful tool ;-)

Thanks for the great review and suggestions and I'm glad you liked it!

I love the synths and energy and climactic nature of it. Reminds me of the good ol' days of Paragonx9. I love the melodies and atmosphere. The transition at 1:28 was a little sudden, though. The structure is really cool. It's very blissful and upbeat. Maybe a little repetitive, and the ending was a little cliché, but that's not going to stop me from giving it 5 stars! Keep up the great work, TeHLoY! ;D

TeHLoY responds:

Thanks! :D

Yeah! :D I really like the atmosphere and the synths. I like what you did with the bass as well, but it came in a little harsh at :41. Those breaks are actually pretty cool, though. Nice work! ;D

Sundans responds:

Thanks for the feed back! I will definitely see what I can do about the lead bass! :D

Yay! :D "Under the Sun" is one of my favorite tracks of yours! I think the rhythm section could even be a little bit stronger than what it is now, given it's DnB, but I love this melody, and it loops well so far! ;) Keep at it, BlueOceans! :D

Everratic responds:

Thankyou! It's the only track of mine that you rated 5 stars so I knew it was your favorite.

Can't say I'm very familiar with Brit pop, but I like this! :) The quirky instruments, especially the percussion, were really used well, and I like how you took a more staccato approach stylistically. It loops really well and is really cute and upbeat. Nice work BO! ;D

Everratic responds:

Oops, that was not meant to be Brit pop. I changed it it.
Thankyou for the review. I think you're going to like the final version even better! :D

I like the synths and progression. The effect at the beginning feels a little out-of-place, however, and I think you've done similar things before. I recognized the bassline from "Take it Off" once you mentioned it. I love the melodies and the structure. One transition that might need work: 2:18. The octave change at 2:17 made it seem like it was going to become more energetic, but then the energy died off a little. Overall, though, this is a fantastic track. You did a nice job with the mixing, and I love what you did with the piano's dynamics at the end. Great work as always, BlueOceans! ;D

You're right, have done that before, I believe it was in my song "In The Future Remake". I just love the sound of that particular synth. I also hate slow boring intros. I always want my intros to be interesting.

"One transition that might need work: 2:18."
I felt like all my transitions in every song I ever made are too complex. I wanted to do a simple transition in this one part of the song. But I understand why you don't like it.

"The octave change at 2:17 made it seem like it was going to become more energetic, but then the energy died off a little."
I did that to add variation to the melody. It wasn't mean to be a transition.

Thankyou for the review! :D

Very upbeat and refreshing! :D It is very wf-ish, but isn't that a good thing? ;) I found it both energetic and relaxing, especially around 1:40. The structure was good, and those little "woops" added a lot to the piece! Nice work as always, Waterflame! ;D

Waterflame responds:

Thanks :D i appreciate it!

I understand. :) I think it's important to make the kind of music that you yourself want to hear, but it's also important to step outside your comfort zone occasionally. Anyway, I like this! :D The blissful mood was cool and the melodies were nice, especially the one at 1:46. I loved the breakdown at 2:11 and how you then transitioned into a more energetic and melodic section again. The ending was perfect, btw - really sweet and conclusive. I won't even comment about the instruments. I think I let myself complain too much about instruments I find too harsh or high-pitched. Well-structured, smooth-flowing, and very blissful! Good job! Keep at it, BlueOceans! ;D

Everratic responds:

This is a great review! Thanks.
When I told you to be open to new instruments, I meant it in a good way. It would help you like more genres of music. I still want to know what you think of the instruments.
A few years ago I literally listened to nothing but pop music. Every time I heard a song that wasn't modern pop music, I would immediately hate it. After forcing myself to listen to new genres like trance, dubstep, and rap, I now like much more than just pop music.
The first time I heard a dubstep song, my reaction was like "How does anyone like this terrible music". Now I enjoy some types of dubstep.
It seems you like soft piano endings. I will do that more often. This is my favorite kind of ending too!

I love the melody and piano. However, it contrasted confusingly to the distorted instrument at :26, which I didn't like all that much. The melody instrument at :56 seemed a little harsh, too. I agree that you could use a lot more structural variety as well as melodic variety, and some different instruments would be nice. It definitely seems incomplete, yet has potential. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the full version! ;D

Everratic responds:

Thankyou for the review!
I agree the melody instrument is too harsh and I will fix that. But I like the bass instrument a lot. Based on your past reviews, I think you should try being more open to new instruments.
I will definitely add more variety to the structure, instruments and some other things, but I do not plan on changing the main melody that much. Imo too much variation can ruin a really good melody. And I have seen that happen in too many newgrounds songs.
I am also looking forward to your next song!

I love the dreamy atmosphere of the piece and the melodies. Reminds me a lot of "Substructure." It's smooth-flowing and calming. I love the mood and instruments. The mixing is completely fine! It got a little too distorted towards the very end for my tastes, but it doesn't make a bad loop. Nice job! ;D

johnfn responds:

Yo thanks dude! I guess I was being too hard on myself about the mixing hah. It's tough to evaluate that stuff though.

The concept of the ending was to smash the whole song to bits with bitcrushing. I like the concept but I probably should have introduced it earlier in the song so that it isn't such a shock! More things to think about... :)
